Hey, everyone, it's Evangeline here at etrailer. Today, we are taking a look at the Rhino-Rack Thru Axle Bike Rack for your Pioneer platforms. If you have a Rhino-Rack platform, then you know that you do have to get more specific accessories to carry around things. This is gonna be a thru axle bike rack that allows you to carry your bikes, but also includes an adapter for those quick-release skewers if that's what you have on your bike. So don't worry about that. Now, for different types of bikes, you may need an adapter.
So that, as well as dimensions of your platform rack that would work best for this bike, are going to be things that we will cover in this review. Whether you have the older Rhino-Rack platform or newer ones like the P6 or newer, the good news is that this bike rack will fit with all of them. And that's because you have different spots on your mounting bracket that will work with those platforms. Most of your Pioneer platforms will be utilizing this for this hole though. And with that, you do get the newer Zwifloc mounting method where when you just turn this bolt, it tightens down within your platform track.
Very quick, very easy. As for the dimensions of your platform rack, you might be wondering, "Well, what if I have a really short platform rack" Or, "What if I have a really long wheel base Will this still work" Well, for example, our bike has the 48 inch wheel base, but the distance from where our front bracket is to our rear bracket is 38 inches. So 10 inches less than our wheel base. That will help you do the math for, "Will my longer bike fit on my shorter platform rack" Chances are, it will. Rhino-Rack makes a lot of bike racks, and they have been making this style of a bike rack for a while now.
So because of that, they do have different skewers available. Your older versions of this rack may have a more outdated style of a skewer for the trendy bikes at that time. So what we have today that came with this bike rack is we do have our 15 by 110 millimeter skewer sleeve, which matches our thru axle bike here. But you can also find a 9 by 100 millimeter quick-release adapter. So if you do have a bike with a quick-release front wheel, this is the one that you can insert instead and use that with your bike.
So if your bikes match those dimensions or measurements, then you don't need to get any extra adapters. But if you have, let's say a smaller fork or a larger skewer, then you can find the Rhino-Rack adapters available here at etrailer. And finally, this does have a weight capacity of 37 pounds for on-road and 24 pounds for off-road. I'm not too concerned about weight capacity with this rack, because when it's on your roof, you're usually more concerned about how much weight do you wanna lift onto your roof or on your rack, as well as the capabilities of your ladder rack or your roof. So with that being said, if you did wanna carry around multiple bikes with this system, that is an option, especially since this does not take up much room. And you do have a lot of adjustability for different types of bikes, because if you have two bikes of similar size near each other, you may wanna scooch one back and the other one forward to get your best clearance. So if you're looking to carry around some bikes on your Pioneer platform, this definitely is gonna be the one for you. It is a little annoying to have to take off the front wheel every time you wanna carry a bike around, but it does make up for it by being easier to reach, as well as a lot more compact versus a wheel-on bike rack. And that's the other thing. If you wanted a wheel-on bike rack, you could get one from pretty much any brand. But for it to work on your Pioneer platform, you would have to get an accessory bar, things like that. Versus the bike rack that's designed for the platform, this just makes it a lot easier, and you don't have to get anything extra. In fact, all the tools are included with this kit, and it is very easy to install, as well as to adjust for your different bikes. So if you're curious about that process, well, let's go take a look at the installation of this rack, as well as the set up of the bike. For installation, what you first need to do is you need to attach all your brackets. This is just a one-time installation, and then you have to figure out if you're gonna be using the quick-release or the thru axle attachment, which is what we have today. And then you put your little Zwifloc nuts on the end. Now, the location of those Zwifloc nuts will be different depending on which platform you use. Here on a regular platform, we have the furthest spots being used for the Zwifloc. So now, we're able to just slide this into the grooves. And once you have it in the spot that you want it to be, you then use your included Torx key, and just tighten down on the bolt, and then the Zwifloc turns and secures to your base. While most people have their rack in this angle and position, if you do find that you have a short platform or your bike is extra long, you can always switch this angle around and have your mount facing this way. Measure out from your fork of your bike all the way to the rear tire, sometimes right before or right after the axle, depending on how long your platform is. Once you've measured out the ideal spot, slide your rear cradle in to match that length. And then we're gonna tighten everything down. Now, you have to get your bike up and onto your roof or onto your platform. So here, we have it where it sits into our fork mount. We're gonna get the fork where the bolt that we took off of our front wheel. We're just gonna push that through and just hand tighten that down, just so that this doesn't fall off. And then, I'm doing that, so that I can then get my rear wheel into position. Don't forget to secure it with the strap that goes around the rim and tightens down. (strap clicking) And once you tighten down your fork to the specs on it, then give your bike a good old shake, just to double check that everything is secure. And that's gonna be it for your set up of your bike rack. With all things being said, there we inchesre three things that I was looking for with this kit that I didn't quite find. And that is, one, where am I putting the front wheel So a lot of people would just have to put this into their cab or in their car when they're driving around. There isn't quite a front wheel holder designed specifically like this rack. The second thing is this does not have any security features. So if you are looking for a lock, that is sold separately. Something that other people do is they just run their own cable lock around their bikes when they are parked. But that's not quite a solution for you when you are driving. And finally, while this can technically work with fat tire bikes, I wouldn't quite recommend it for tires that are over three inches. Our tire here is 2.8 when it comes to the width. And even with that, our strap is mainly maxed out. It would be really hard to get leverage around the tire with a strap, unless you have a longer strap for those wider tires. So just keep all that in mind when you're thinking about your bike with this platform on your vehicle. But hopefully, this video helped you out with seeing if this will fit your bike, if this will fit your platform, and if it will fit your adventures. This right here was a look at the Rhino-Rack Thru Axle Bike Rack for your Pioneer platform racks at etrailer.com. My name's Evangeline, and I hope you enjoyed this journey.
